Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge particular decisions from the official, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
